Information Technology
Vision  :

Haryana Forest Policy document 2006 has envisioned that a strong Management Information System (MIS) should be developed in the Forest Department. MIS/GIS (Geographical Information System) should be set up for forest mapping for effective management of forest areas.

The Proposal :

The present endeavor of development of MIS/GIS in Haryana Forest Department is not to replace any conventional interventions of tree plantations, field protection of forest resources or ongoing forestry research activities but to strengthen our planning and management capabilities with availability of effective decision support system in problem solving MIS/GIS environment. The forest department has voluminous data of forest resources in form of maps and scripts. These maps are old and often poorly drawn without any geo-referencing. Any data loses its usability, if it is not properly analyzed or interpreted. The proposed computerization of available data in GIS environment promises easy retrieval, analysis and interpretation with user based query support. The geographical distribution of forest resources and ongoing forestry operations may be best understood and appreciated in maps. These maps are best managed in GIS environment. The GIS will not only facilitate in replacing the process of making , revising, using and managing the unwieldy conventional hardcopy of maps but will also make them user friendly, intelligent and responsive to queries in graphical interface. A mere mouse click on any feature in graphic instantaneously opens the complete list of attributes of that feature. Similarly an attribute based query immediately highlights the feature meeting those criteria and hence can be well understood in spatial context.

Objectives :
  • The primary objective of the introduction of Geomatics in Haryana Forest Department (HFD) is to manage huge amount of spatial and non-spatial forest resources data in user-friendly problem solving environment for efficient Planning and Monitoring.

  • To explore the potential of RS & GIS for better forest resource management by under taking Research & Development Activities.

  • To make RS & GIS integral to decision making process at all levels in department.

  • To enhance the utility of existing database and generate further reliable data for the different wings of the Haryana Forest Department.

  • Integrating MIS with GIS through development of Forest Management Information System.
