Haryana though deficient in natural forest has variety of wildlife species. What makes it a unique place for wild fauna is its location and climatic, edaphic and topographic variation. State boundaries are almost co-terminus with the three bio geographic zones namely Himalaya in north, Gangetic plain in east and Thar desert in south and west. Due to these ecotones rich wildlife particularly avifauna is found in Haryana. Out of the total 1250 odd bird species reported in the Indian subcontinent approximately 450 are reported to spend at least some time in a year in Haryana.Due to its unique location, water birds from Europe and Siberia spend a part of their winter sojourn in the small ponds, lakes and canals of Haryana while migrating to and from to less hostile warmer climate towards equator. Similarly lots of species of terrestrial birds come and stay during the winters. Attitudinal migration is also observed among the Himalayan species. To avoid harsh winters birds like Black Bulbuls, Blue Whistling Thrush, Red Billed Blue Magpie, Verditer Flycatcher come down to Shivalik hills of northern Haryana.

Various types of ducks and geese such as Graylag Goose, Bar headed Goose, Brahminy Duck, Mallard, Gadwall, Eurasian Wigeon, Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveller, Common Pochard, Tuftet Pochard can be seen in the ponds and lakes of state throughout the winter. Spot Billed Duck is resident of Haryana.Black Francolin is declared as State Bird of Haryana. It is found through out state. Among other beautiful birds found in the state are: Indian Peafowl, Eurasian Golden Oriole, Copper Smith Barbet, Indian Koel, Pied Crested Cuckoo, Crimson Sunbird, Sarus Crane, Red Wattled Lapwing, Crested Lark, Pied Bushchat, White Breasted Kingfisher, Blue jay, White Ibis, Black Rumped Flamback Woodpecker etc.

Haryana is not very rich in mammals but there are some very important species found in the state. Goral (Nemorhaedus Geral) is a wild goat species found in the Shivalik belt of Haryana. Among the antelopes Haryana has Black Buck (Antilope cervicarpa), Chinkara (Gazella gazella) and Blue Bull (Boselaphus tragocamelus) ranging freely in the agricultural fields of central land western Haryana. The major species of deers found in the state are Sambhar (Cervus unicolor) , Hog Deer (Axis porcinus), Spotted Deer (Axis axis), and Barking Deer (Muntiacus muntjak ). A Except Hog Deer, all deers are found in the Shivalik Belt. Hog deer is also found along the Yamuna river in the Faridabad district. river in the Faridabad district.

Major predator animal in the state is Leopard (Panthera Pardus) which is mainly confined to Shivaliks . Spa radically it has come to southern and western Haryana in the Aravalli region from the neighboring Rajasthan. Tiger ( Panthera tigris) has also been reported to visit Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary in Yamuna Nagar district. Among other mammals found in Haryana are : Monkey(Rhesus macaque), Common Langur( Presbytis entellus), Jungle cat ( Felis chaus), Indian Civet ( Viverricula indica), Common mongoose (Herpes edwardsi), Jackal (Canis aureus), Grey musk shrew (Suncus murinus), Indian porcupine( Hystrix indica) and Indian Wild Boar ( Suscrofa).
Raptilians found in Haryana are Indian Cobra ( Naja naja), Common Krait ( Boungarus caeruleus), Water Snake(Cerberus rhynchops), Rat snake ( Ptyas mucosus), Indian Pythan ( Pythan molurus), Common Worm snakes ( Typhlina bramina), Rock Gecko ( Hemidactylus maculatus), Indian Chameleon ( Chamaeleon zey lanicus) and Monitor Lizard ( Varanus griseus).For Ex-situ and in- situ conservation of wild fauna government has established has 2 National Parks and 10 Wild life Sancturaies in Haryana . Besides that there are two Mini Zoos at Rohtak and Pipli and two Deer Parks at Meham and Hissar. Red jungle Fowl breeding centre at Morni and Vulture Care Centre at Pinjore are two ambitions projects of the department. A open bird safari has been established at Berwala near Panchkula.
