Chinkara Breeding Centre Kairu

Chinkara Breeding Centre Kairu is situated on Bhiwani-Behal Road at Kairu, Distt. Bhiwani & lies between 28° 40’N latitude and 75° 56’E longitude. C.B.C. Kairu has been started as a deer park in the year 1985, in a patch of natural mixed forest. Initially, 10 chinkaras from the natural habitat were released in the 60-acre fenced area to provide assured protection to them. Animal rescued from different places of Haryana are also kept in C.B.C. Kairu.

C.B.C. Kairu is 1 Km. away from the Kairu bus stand and 35 Km. away from the Bhiwani railway station. The Breeding Centre is well connected by road with Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur and other important cities. There is a good network of approach roads all along the periphery of the Breeding Centre. The nearest Airport is Delhi which is 150 Km. away from the Breeding Centre. Nearby important zoos are Mini Zoo Bhiwani, Rohtak Zoo, N.Z.P. Delhi, M.C. Zoological Park Chhatbir & Jaipur Zoo

C.B.C. Kairu is established with a view to achieving the following objectives:

1. Conservation, education and awareness generation among general people and to develop a healthy relationship between animals and human being.
2. Display of animals for education and amusement to visitors.
3. To provide a safe abode to the rescued, confiscated, injured maimed, orphaned and sick wild animals.
4. To maintain the gene pool of the threatened Chinkara species of Haryana.
5. To protect chinkara species from immediate and impending danger to their lives.
6. To provide all possible humane method of rearing, maintenance in captivity, veterinary and other care.
7. For research on the various aspects of ecology and behaviour of chinkara species.

Maintenance

Maintenance of the Breeding Centre and animals are in general good. The Breeding Centre is looked after by an Inspector Wildlife and a Sub-Inspector Wildlife who are under the control of Divisional Wildlife Officer, Hisar.

Only chinkara species are kept in the Breeding Centre which belongs to Schedule-I of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Animals are kept in a forested area of 24 hectares enclosed by fencing.

Animals live on natural feed. In the lean period animals are fed twice a day (Morning & Evening) with their full diet. Foods are provided for the species in the feeding cells on a sterile surface. However, the animals are not allowed to stay on a hard surface beyond feeding time. Feed for the animals living in social groups is placed at as many locations as necessary to safeguards against weak and young animals. There is one big off-display Chinkara enclosure with 2 sections and one small display (1 ha) Chinkara enclosure (6-8 animals) with educational signage etc. and public conveniences on the front side.

Local veterinary doctor and staff are available instantly on need. No permanent veterinary staff is here. But health check-up of the captivated chinkaras is arranged on regular intervals through the local veterinary doctor. There is no veterinary unit, hospital, laboratory equipment etc.

Store and food supply system for chinkaras are good and adequate. Food of each animal species is given according to feed schedule as prescribed by Chief Wildlife Warden, Haryana. Good quality food is given which is regularly checked. Special feed sometimes is given according to the prescription of the Veterinary Surgeon as and whenever necessary. A separate good storeroom is required to be made soon as present storeroom is insufficient and requires heavy maintenance to make it suitable.

The feed supplied is hygienic and of high quality. Appropriate food supplements are given as per Veterinary Surgeon’s (VS) prescription for species and individual to individual to avoid nutritional deficiencies or specific needs. The sanitation system is maintained properly for up keeping of general health of animals in the Breeding Centre. Enclosure and surrounding area is cleaned regularly; debris’s are taken out and burnt regularly.

Disposal of solid and liquid waste It is taken up regularly and burnt in a safe place to keep the area neat and clean to maintain the centre in hygienic conditions. The leftover food elements, animal excreta and rubbish are being removed regularly and disposed of in a manner congenial to the general cleanliness of the Breeding Centre.

Facilities:

1. Uninterrupted water supply to the Breeding Centre animals as well as visitors. There is a water supply line of this department as well as the Public Health department to supply water throughout the year to all the areas of the Breeding Centre where animals are kept. Underground pipelines are laid down and running water supply facilities is available in the breeding centre. However, new pipelines will be required for the new water tank.
2. Sanitary facilities for the visitors but some more are required.
3. Sitting arrangement and rest sheds are not available yet for the visitors but there is need to be constructed.
4. Veterinary facilities for Breeding Centre animals by local veterinary doctors.
5. Breeding Centre staff is there to take care of animals but a number of staff is inadequate in number.
6. Entry gate, as well as a good network of the road around the Breeding Centre, is available.
7. Staff quarters are situated outside the periphery of the Breeding Centre but a number of staff quarters are inadequate and required through repairing.
